The Charge of the Coffee GoddessBy Sarah Fisher![]() Listen to the words of the Goddess of Beans, she who was of old also called Sweet Java, Arabica, Canephora, Creamy Latte, Robusta, Cappuccino, Mocha, and by many other names. Whenever ye shall wake on a dreary morning, once in the day, and better it be when your mug is clean, then shall ye assemble at mine shrine, at the humble French Press or the American machine; and if ye be wise, with a grinder. There shall ye gather, ye who are fain to open your eyes, but have not yet seen the light; to these will I bestow the Aroma of the Mysteries. Then shall your mind be free of the cobwebs of dreams; and as a sign that ye be really free, thou shalt feel thy blood quicken in thy veins; for mine is the acceleration of life, the awakening of the spirit and the bitterness of dregs, though you may attempt to conceal the Taste of Truth with sugar. Keep pure your mug, strive ever towards it, and let naught stop you or turn you aside. For mine is the purest and darkest of beans, and not the frozen granule. Also know this: I have been with you since the dawn, and I am that which is attained at the end of the steaming. |
