A Presidential Inaugural Speech

By Jonathan Underhill

Hey all *waves*

Just a few words from your new President. First of all can I thank all those at the AGM on behalf of myself and the new committee for showing confidence in us: I hope we will live up to expectations.

Before I talk about next year, I feel a little needs to be said about years previously. I personally would like to commend the past committee especially its president Ms Kimberley Huggens for the excellent work that has been done in helping to make the society a diverse and dynamic place to meet and make friends. Whilst there may be changes, much of what I hope to achieve next year will only be possible thanks to the solid foundations put in place by those who have come before me. Again, from myself and the new committee, thank you.

Well then, on to next year! There are many things which I hope to achieve, but first and foremost I hope the upcoming academic year will be a period of growth and consolidation for the Pagan Society. We have a lot to offer people and I want to try and reach as many people as possible though our social events, talks and workshops. Freshers Fayre is looming and as always is a busy time for us, and preparations are already underway for both the day itself and the first month of our program.

One thing that is of particular importance to me is the continued student input into the running of the society. It is after all your society, and I would welcome any suggestions of activities that you want to see, or workshops you would like to run. In terms of social events we will continue to hold the now hallowed Thursday night social at the ‘Macky’, but I hope to extend the range outwards from there, possibly to include attendance at Fun Factory on a Monday night, as well as Metros, the Welsh Club and Bogeys – however as with everything these will depend on popular support and if there are things that people would prefer then please, I implore you, let us know. I want the society to cater for as many tastes as possible, but I can’t do that if I don’t know what people want from the society, so I repeat, all suggestions welcome.

As for other events, the committee will be meeting shortly to discuss the planning of several trips, notably to Stonehenge and Glastonbury as well as other sites of interest. I am in the process of contacting those who may be interested in speaking for us – however if you are interested please contact me, my email is at the bottom of the page – and I hope to be able to present a varied and interesting selection to stimulate your minds. Following on from the success of the ‘Introduction To Group Ritual’ Workshops that were held at the beginning of last year, we are intending to run a similar series of workshops offering an ‘Introduction to Magic and Spellcraft’ which will hopefully be as popular… so watch this space. Also back by popular demand are the Tarot Coffee Club and Witchcraft 101 sessions, more detail on these popular events as we get them.

There remains little for me to do other than to repeat that this is your society and I want it to cater for what you want. There will be committee meetings on a regular basis which will be open to you, please come along and have a chat with us – we don’t bite I promise.

If you have any questions or ideas please do not hesitate to contact me.
