Pagan Scenes from Russia

By Harrison Mansfield

Pagan scenes, Russian dawn
Violent surge and diamond sky;
Iridescent night, lust, be born;
Rose on cross: die.
Violet stretch, thunder torn;
Rising, brooding storm.
Gently wake, o forest, darkly
With sun shown leaves and shadowed branch.
Run, fight, rip, rend
O scarlet, savage dance!
Till gods the sun send,
Till fawns softly prance;
Pattern weaves
Summer song darts
The night’s dark light slowly parts.
