Salva Nos

By The Mediaeval Baebes

1997 Virgin Records Ltd.

I was first introduced to the music of the Mediaeval Baebes at Witchfest UK 2003, and I fell in love immediately: when I got home I went online and bought nearly all of their albums, which I am still playing constantly.

Salva Nos is a beautiful album of music in the classic Mediaeval Baebes style: evocative, wickedly funny in places, and... mediaeval! The band take their inspiration from early poetry, and often sing Old English and Latin poems. In this album we find the Baebes singing a very funny French song ('Ah Si Mon Moine'), many Latin ones (such as 'Salva Nos' and 'Verbum Caro') and some quite well-known Middle English poetry ('Adam Lay Ibounden.')

The songs are addictive, wonderfully performed, and full of history, enchantment, and untold stories from long ago. This album is a true joy to listen to, and would be perfect for anybody looking for something a little different to your average packaged Pop music, or for the person who is a Romantic at heart.
